The PRESCRIP-TEC project is trying an innovative approach to cervical cancer screening, using HPV self-tests for at-home use. It incorporates artificial intelligence as a decision support system for cases requiring Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) in the absence of a gynaecologist

Self-tests for at-home use are very convenient for women, eliminating the need to travel to a health center and providing greater discretion.

If the result is negative, they do not need further examination.

We estimate that fewer than 25% of women will test positive, requiring follow-up VIA. This is expected to significantly reduce the workload of health services

Thanks to this screening innovation process women can easily take self HPV tests at home and only those who test positive will need to take the screening. During the screening, the health workers can take a picture of cervix using AI Device and the artificial intelligence decision support system will provide an answer whether if there are worrying signals or lesions that needs further examination.

One of the main advantages of using this artificial intelligence system is that there is not inter or intra observer variation (doctors can interpretate pictures differently but the artificial intelligence is always consistent). The other big advantage is that there is no need for the gynaecologist to be present at each examination, which saves resources and makes possible to carry out regular cervical cancer screenings in remote areas.
